To Sochi with love

I've been quiet for some time. Life can throw things in your path that takes up your time or energy. Today however I want to talk about Sochi Olympics. It has been a topic of great discussion in our community of late.

The issue before us all is Russia's drastic and cruel anti-gay laws and the brutal violence it is spawning against us, simply for existing.

Some are calling for a boycott or even moving the Olympics to a nation that respects Human rights. Others stress an embargo of any Russian product. The suggestions are many but I think they all sort of miss the point we should be making.

Condemnation rarely works in authoritarian societies. It only sets them against you and entrenches them further in their beliefs and ideology. An embargo unless on a huge scale may hurt companies but does little to touch a government. To boycott or move the Olympics does not change beliefs. It will be viewed as an attack on values.

So how do we make an impact on a society set on dehumanizing a group or hurting them?  You love! Man may hurt you, lock you up, even condemn you. But it does not mean you can not do a thing. Love! Kiss, hug, hold hands, even dance. Love is not propaganda it is a connection. If you do not have that then your message is a voice in the wind.

Be who you are and stand. Refuse censure. Be proud and show love. Only in that purity can hate face the light of truth. When you see and know love before you it becomes much harder to hate. When you see it the lie that it is not natural begins to falter. When you stand, in love, you cause surety to waver.

I know I make it sound easy but it is not. To undo hate, violence, and miseducation takes time and many brave souls standing in unity and love letting that which society has unleashed know we are here and our love is not wrong.

Reject hate and do not allow it to flourish by inaction or complicity. Love and let the world see it. Let Russia see it.

For some time now I have been watching the events in Russia and have become rather concerned for the LGBT community there. New laws being passed suppress the very existence or voice of our community. It is a crude and old method to attempt to control a group by removing their right to even debate in public. They may not be able to speak without repercussion but I can.

To deny a voice, a life, to your own citizen, a son, daughter, mother, or father is to deny yourself. The hate you spew forth invades your community like  a nest of bitter vipers. You teach hate and intolerance. You set in motion the formations of sanctioned groups who will undermine your society as they seek to carry your limitations further. You create a system where they will judge you and the power slowly slips to them. Be careful the virulence you unleash it may consume you and millions more.

You know this reminds me of our own LGBT history here in the US. A time when same sex couples could not dance together in public without fear of arrest so gays and lesbians paired together when needed to conceal their innocent desire to just express their joy.  They danced as they would until a watchful eye came around and then they concealed their love.

So to my Russian readers I say take a lesson from us. You may not be able to speak or hold a sign or banner without persecution but you can dance. And if you think about it being visible in a completely normal and innocent expression is just as moving and informing as any. Show them love and that it is natural.

Here in the United States it is LGBT Pride month. So many of us struggle so long with pride, in ourselves and those in our community. We seem to have to fight to just be us. A luxury many who are not LGBT take for granted. Even when we find our colors it is still a process of ever brightening them and showing them to the world.

So my suggestion is decorate yourself vividly, dance wildly, stand and watch with amazement, or just be whoever you are. In the end Pride is about being comfortable with you and the others in your community. It does not matter how you celebrate it matters that you do celebrate. Because respect and dignity should begin in yourself.
